Thinking of Shakib Al Hassan about world cup 2019

Bangladesh ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan believes his side has all the necessary ingredients to do well in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 and to even win the tournament. Though the ICC flagship event is almost seven months away from taking place in England and Wales, Bangladesh has started gaining the proverbial ‘World Cup fever’.

The recent confidence gained by the Tigers to do well in the 10-nation world event has been driven from the performances displayed in the ACC Asia Cup 2018. Despite the hard UAE conditions and major setbacks from injuries, Bangladesh stormed into the final of the six-nation tournament and finished as the second best team in Asia.

Shakib said the conditions in England during the World Cup might not be suitable but given the history of ICC events, a flat-track will favor Bangladesh and this might work as a positive. This time, the cricket world cup will see a team take on the nine opponents in the competition during the first round. The first four teams will move into the semi-finals and final.

“The biggest boost for us is that the entire country is expecting us to be champions and this is not without a reason. It was never this way when we played the World Cup in the past. But this time the expectation is there because the supporters believe in it and so do the players. I am sure everyone in BCB also believes the same,” said Shakib to the media on Wednesday.

Shakib’s claim was based on Bangladesh’s performance in ODI cricket since 2015. Since the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, Bangladesh have played 58 ODIs with a solid 53.45 percent win-rate with 31 victories in the format coming against almost all the top sides.

“The 50-over format is our strongest format compared to Tests and T20I’s. So that is another reason for us to be confident. The way we are preforming, we are the second best team in Asia now. We have won against Pakistan who played the finals against India in the last Champions Trophy. I believe we have a very good chance in the World Cup this time. There are very good teams in the competition so we will have to make sure we are competitive. It will be tough as we will have to play nine matches in the first round to qualify for the semifinal stage,” said the T20I and Test skipper.

“I believe the semis and the final game is comparatively easier. You have to play nine matches in the first round and only two matches in the remaining segment of the tournament,” the Bangladesh ace all-rounder added.Bangladesh Cricket News
